This is an Austin/Akin bunionectomy with screw fixation of both osteotomies. This is my standard procedure for a moderate bunion deformity. The patient is allowed full weight bearing with a cast boot post-operatively. This is for 4 weeks, then the patient is allowed to wear a gym shoe. Full bone healing takes 12 weeks, therefore the patient is limited to low impact activities until that time. This is a very commonly done procedure. Patrick A. DeHeer, DPM.
