This is a fusion procedure of the big toe joint using a plate and screws for fixation. This is used for an arthritic big toe joint or a severe bunion deformity. This procedure is very predictable and has been well documented in the literature. This is one of my favorite procedures. The recovery time is about 7 weeks in a walking boot and the another 5 weeks in a gym shoe. Complete healing takes about 12 weeks. The hardware usually does need to be removed especially on women, because they tend to have very little tissue between the skin and bone on the foot and will feel the hardware. Once the fusion has healed, the hardware is no longer needed. This is part 3. This is the new Synthes locking plate and compression device. Patrick A. Deheer, DPM.
