One of the indications for esophageal stenting is the formation of a fistula after surgery for benign or malignat disease. these fistulas creat a communication between the lumen of the esophagus and the skin (esophago - cutaneous fistulas) or the trachea (esophago - tracheal fistulas) or the mediastinum and other areas around the esophagus. They can lead to multiple complications, repeat surgical interventions prolonged hospitalizations and sometimes can be leathal. The video that follows is from a patient that was operated for esophageal adenocarcinoma on Barrett's esophagus and had a complicated esophago - cutaneous and esophago -tracheal fistula after surgery. A metallic covered esophageal stent was placed in the esophagus which covered all fistula openings in the esophagus and stopped the leakage.
